TLDR: When billionaire Ted Leonsis feared the plane he was on would crash, he made a promise to himself that resulted in a list of 101 life goals. He has since completed 81 of them.
‘Tis the season for New Year’s resolutions.
Exercise more, eat healthier, love family and friends more deeply, lose weight, save money… blah blah blah.
Whether you’re writing down resolutions, setting a list of goals, or trading in your goals for curiosity this year, this week between Christmas and New Year’s is always a good time to hit the reset button and realign yourself.
My favorite story of this is from Ted Leonsis.
In 1982, the then founder of LIST Magazine and now famed billionaire, was on a plane that nearly crashed due to technical failures. In that moment, he promised himself that if he didn’t die, he would “play offense” the rest of his life.
That experience resulted in what has become a well-known list of 101 life goals.
And we’re not talking about “lose weight” or “eat healthier.” We’re talking about “reach $1 billion in net worth, after taxes (#15)” and “go to outer space (#84).”
Remarkably, Ted has since crossed off 81 of his 101 goals, including owning a sports franchise and winning a world championship (#40 & #41).
What goals are you setting for yourself, are you aiming high enough, and are you playing offense or defense?
See you Monday.
Thanks Jeff for the friendly reminders/nudges. My 2021 year was improved with a new filter of "prioritizing loving/caring over being right" This filter stays! In 2022 I will be adding a new "be curious" filter, while I work to become healthier :). Lisa
