TLDR: You’re allowed to give yourself an off day, you just can’t quit.
We’ve been writing every single Monday for almost four and a half years.
Over that time, Monday Morning Meeting has evolved from a scrappy whatever-is-on-my-mind-atomic-habit to what I think is a more thoughtful commentary on venture capital.
But every once in a while when a long weekend, a flight, or a sick day get in the way, I downshift to reminding everyone that it’s not always about the quality of the work, sometimes it’s about the commitment and consistency.
If you’re new here. We call it punching the clock.
And from a quick search of the archives, it looks like I’ve posted this four times in four years. One free pass per year.
But even when it’s one of these seemingly off day freebies, I still get up, and I still post.
Yes, I actually do write these on Monday mornings.
And it turns out effort does compound over time.
Networks do compound over time.
And good habits do drive results over time.
If I am looking for founders who are resilient, I too need to be resilient.
If I am looking for founders who treat failure as something that is not an option, I too need to treat failure the same way.
Monday Morning Meeting is just one outlet to practice that along with so many other minor tasks, hard things, and long-term goals.
That’s why even though I could have slept in today for the first time in a while, I got up, grabbed a couple screenshots, reflected on those moments highlighted by the little green/black lines that once felt like meaningful progress, and remembered to punch the clock.
Enjoy the long weekend, and as always…
See you Monday.
Timely leadership that provokes me to go weekly, in a return to writing (new home called Performance Notes) this week. Thank you.
