TLDR: Sometimes quotes feel cliché, other times they catch you in that perfect moment
Coming to you a bit later this week, living on Mountain Standard Time this Martin Luther King Jr. Day. He would’ve been 93 last Saturday, and in the spirit of nonviolent philosophy, I thought I’d call on the Dalai Lama for today’s MMM.
The Dalai Lama XIV, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, he said:
Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.
Last week, I spent a few half days at Seattle Ridge reading Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey.
What a storyteller that guy is.
I was reminded of the quote above, when between tales of bare-knuckle brawls and living on the other side of the world McConaughey says:
We don’t live longer when we try not to die, we live longer when we are too busy living."
Maybe it was the mountaintop air or the Sun Valley skiing, but it hit a little differently than when Red and Andy Dufresne said it.
See you Monday.
Love the Dalai Lama quote. I enjoyed the Greenlights audiobook as well and bookmarked this exact quote!
Love this post Jeff, have a few runs for me ")
