TLDR: Should have stopped at TLDR.
Whether optimizing for brevity or demonstrating mastery, shorter emails are a superpower of the productive & successful.
An exercise:
Find a recent sent email
Remove/replace as many words as possible without losing the message
Repeat Step #2 until the note is uncomfortably short
We call this “cavespeak.”
Here’s an example, from the last message in my outbox:
I would always take any recommendation from you, Tim. If you think she would be a solid Chief of Staff, or has interest in sourcing companies, we will certainly look at all backgrounds.
Here’s cavespeak:
“Yes.”
I should’ve have chosen a more complicated email to demonstrate, but it’s Monday, and ““If I had more time I would have written you a shorter letter better blog post.” - Winston Churchill””- Me”
See you Monday.
